Just Musin’ Around
Jim Brauch
Jim was raised in the Everett area where he started fishing at the young age of four. Living in the projects and in the “riverside” area Jim would sneak down to the Snohomish River as a child and fish for bull trout, sea run cutthroat, bullheads and what he thought were rainbow trout, later he discovered they were steelhead smolt going out to sea, but they sure tasted great. Aftr returning from the Marine Corps in 1966, Jim took up skiing but an accident kept him off the ski slopes for awhile and he discovered steelhead fishing, which took over his life. He has not been on skis since.
Fishing is life! No other sport offers so much enjoyment, in his opinion, nor can be so satisfying. You can also make a good meal out of fishing, unlike many other sports. He feels life should be met with a sense of humor whenever possible and tries to entertain as well as instruct in his classes and writings.
Jim has been a long time member of the Everett Steelhead and Salmon Club, one of the original PSA members, and has been on the Board of Directors for over 20 years and has been active in fishing issues statewide. He recognizes that politics and fishing are inexorably intertwined and addresses those issues when necessary but feels that fishing should also be fun. Most of what he has learned about fishing has been at the hands of others and he is always willing to share what he has learned by holding fishing classes through the Everett Parks and Recreation Department for many years. He developed The Five Rules of Fishing many years ago as a teaching tool to explain both the intricacy and the simplicity of successful fishing.
Jim retired from Law Enforcement in 1999. His experiences in that arena made him understand the importance of furnishing opportunities for the youth in the community and fostered his interest in youth fishing events. He spends much of his time supporting youth activities and teaching young people the joys of fishing. “The young people are the future of fishing and if we do not nurture their outdoor opportunities, the future of fishing will be imperiled.”
